About Us

The Bookshelf

The Writers’ Community of York Region is proud to present over 50 local authors at The Bookshelf. In the Newmarket Community Centre & Lions Hall (next to the Farmer’s Market), local authors, publishers, and reading-related craftpersons from all over York region and the GTA will feature their own works.

Learn the stories behind the books. Rub elbows with local talent. Have a cup of coffee and listen to authors read their favorite passages. Participate in the FREE scavenger hunt, dollar-draws, spot prizes, and go home with a whole new to-be-read pile.

Between 10:00am and 1:30pm, authors will read excerpts from all genres and be available to sign books at their tables. See the Reading Schedule for when authors speak. Draw winners will be announced at 1:15pm in the Reading Room.

The Writers’ Community of York Region encourages local authors in all genres and at all levels. Through monthly meetings and workshops, the group offers support, education, networking and the opportunity just to get out and hang with other authors and industry professionals for a few soul satisfying hours. The WCYR also supports events that promote the value of writers, such as The Bookshelf, where readers get a chance to experience and discover homegrown talent.
