We are Just Testing

Social MediaYes, it happens all the time. Something goes wrong and our social media feeds stop working. But this is not the end of the road. No, we are diving into the problem and checking out what can be done about it. In order to see what the problem is, this post is being made.

That’s right, this post is not about information, it is about testing our site in order to make sure everything is working correctly. We want people to know what is happening with The Bookshelf, and in order to do that, we need it to push to our Social Media accounts. If it does not, then how else are you going to get important information about this wonderful event?

Keep your eyes open for what comes down the pipe in the next few days.

And make sure you bookmark our website, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and just basically keep your friends in the loop about what you will be doing come the day of May 13th!

See you at The Bookshelf!

Burgher and the Woebegone at the Bookshelf

Burgher is a gnome, which is just another name for an ugly elf. He lives in a grey world, among slugs and mushrooms and he likes it that way. A black cloud follows him around like a curse. It must be the Apple Tree Man’s revenge for destroying the orchard, but Burgher had to destroy it. He couldn’t bear to go through another spring, with birds and bees and butterflies. When he finds a green toenail in his otherwise grey garden, Burgher knows that the Apple Tree Man is back, and his must come up with a plan to drive him off once more, before the trees burst into stinking bloom and the butterflies start their infuriating flutter-byes. This choose-your-own adventure is a gentle, funny look at how self-pity can turn the world grey. Help Burgher make the right decisions!

Kim Chatel is an author, fiber artist and photographer. She visits schools and libraries, bringing her art and books to students and inspiring them to create their own. Visit Kim at Chatel Village (www.kimchatel.com) where you can find books recipes, movies, book reviews and crafts.

Hear Kim Chatel read from Burgher and the Woebegone at the Bookshelf at the Newmarket Farmer’s Market on June 25th, 2016 at 11:15am.

Meet your next favorite author at the Bookshelf!

You Never Know

It’s hard to say when you’ll meet someone how it makes a real impression on your life. They could be a person just walking down the street, a parent, sibling, co-worker, or even a celebrity if you get the chance. But these days are not like the 1970’s when we could just walk up to the likes of John Schuck and to get an autograph (yes, I did that in the 70’s during a break in a game show, got John Schuck’s autograph when I was 12). At the time, we called it touching greatness.

So, with so many rising stars coming out to play, would you not join in and come out to a play where authors like Rob Brunet, Alyxandra Harvey, Marissa Campbell, and Terry Fallis, will be present? These four skilled and entertaining writers are amazing people to meet, and will enrich the lives of those they touch.

Come on out to The Bookshelf on June 25th and meet those people who are leaving a mark on the literary world.

When it just comes down to one book

Authors are avid readers. Heck, I’ve always got my nose in one book or another at any given time. Just look at my GoodReads account (that is after I do a monthly update) and see how many books I remembered reading and have read through my life. If an author does not have listed over 300 books then they are not updating their reading list (or just started to post what they read).

If a writer loves to read, then why are you not also? Think about what there is out there for you. Everything from flights of fancy to incredible adventures. Time travel to horrifying stories. Triumph of spirit to undeniable heartache. Yes, we writers create it all.
And when you have a chance to see a group of writers in person, just imagine how rich it will be for the soul. To actually talk to the creator of your next favourite book!

Join us at The Bookshelf, June 25th in Newmarket. You’ll be amazed.

Weird and Wonderful

We authors are a weird and wonderful breed, represented by all shapes, sizes, sexes and colours. The strangest part is we spend much of our lives by ourselves creating wonderful worlds for you to enjoy, people to love or hate, and fantastic adventures to tag along in. Many of us go for years without our wonderful work being recognized, while others skyrocket to the best sellers list faster than an Apollo rocket thrusts its way out of the atmosphere.

Don’t miss out on any of those fantastic authors still building their launch pad. Come out to The Bookshelf this June to meet your next rising star.
